Saint Petersburg, located in western Russia, is the country's second-largest city and a major cultural center. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, it served as the imperial capital of Russia from 1712 until 1918. St. Petersburg has an extensive system of canals and more than 400 bridges, earning it the nickname “Venice of the North”. The city's architecture is of various styles, including Baroque, Neoclassical and Russian Revival, with many buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Located 29 kilometers west of Saint Petersburg, the Peterhof Palace complex is often called the "Russian Versailles." This UNESCO World Heritage site features a grand palace, an extensive park, and a remarkable system of fountains, including the famous Grand Cascade. The palace was commissioned by Peter the Great and served as the summer residence for Russian emperors. The Grand Palace showcases elaborate Baroque architecture, while the Lower Park contains 176 fountains and four cascades, operating without the use of pumps through a unique hydraulic system designed in the 18th century.

The city's religious architecture is exemplified by the Saint Isaac's Cathedral, the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city, and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, famous for its intricate mosaic designs. The Mariinsky Theatre, home to the renowned Mariinsky Ballet company, has played a crucial role in the development of Russian ballet and opera since its opening in 1860.

Saint Petersburg experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by warm summers and long, cold winters. The city is famous for its "White Nights" phenomenon, occurring from mid-June to early July, when darkness never falls due to its northern location.

The city serves as a major trade gateway, scientific center, and industrial hub. Its port is Russia's second-largest after Novorossiysk. The city houses hundreds of research institutions, including the Pulkovo Observatory and numerous universities, making it one of Russia's most important centers for education and science.

Transportation in Saint Petersburg includes an extensive public transit system featuring the fifth-busiest metro system in Europe, numerous bus routes, and a network of trams and trolleybuses. The city is also a major railway hub, with connections to Helsinki, Berlin, and other European cities through the Moskovsky railway station.

During World War II, then known as Leningrad, the city endured a devastating 872-day siege by Nazi German forces, resulting in the deaths of more than one million civilians. This tragic period, known as the Siege of Leningrad, became a defining moment in both the city's and Russia's history.

Modern Saint Petersburg continues to be a major cultural destination, hosting numerous annual events including the Stars of the White Nights Festival and the International Economic Forum. The city's rich literary history is connected to famous Russian writers such as Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, and Gogol, who lived and worked there. Today, it remains Russia's cultural capital, attracting millions of tourists annually to its museums, theaters, and historical sites.
