About Nizhny Novgorod Metro

The Nizhny Novgorod Metro is a rapid transit system serving Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Opened on November 20, 1985, it became the third metro system built in Russia during the Soviet era, after Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The system consists of two lines - Avtozavodskaya (Line 1) and Sormovskaya (Line 2) - with a total length of 13.4 miles (21.6 kilometers).

The metro network currently includes 15 stations, with most of them featuring standard Soviet-era design elements. The system connects major residential areas with the city center and industrial zones, particularly the Avtozavodsky District, home to the GAZ automobile plant. Daily ridership averages approximately 115,000 passengers.

One of the system's most notable features is the Metro Bridge across the Oka River, which opened in 2012. This unique structure serves both metro trains and road traffic on different levels, making it one of the few combined metro-highway bridges in the world. The bridge significantly improved transportation between the upper and lower parts of the city.

The stations operate from 5:15 AM to midnight, with trains running every 6-8 minutes during peak hours and 11-12 minutes during off-peak times. The fare system uses contactless smart cards and tokens, while single-ride paper tickets were discontinued in 2019.

Future development plans include the extension of the Sormovskaya Line toward the Sormovsky District and the construction of new stations in the upper part of the city. However, like many Russian metro systems outside Moscow, expansion progress has been relatively slow due to funding constraints.
