About Kazan Metro
The Kazan Metro, opened on August 27, 2005, is a rapid transit system serving Kazan, the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It became the seventh metro system built in Russia and the first one constructed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The system consists of one line - the Central Line (Line 1), which runs for 16.8 kilometers (10.4 miles) and includes 11 stations. A second metro line is being built (Feb 2024). The metro connects central Kazan with its northeastern districts, running from the Aviastroitelnaya station to the Prospekt Pobedy station. The line serves major residential areas, the city center, and several key transportation hubs.
Kazan Metro operates using modern rolling stock, primarily the 81-553.3/554.3/555.3 "Kazan" train models manufactured specifically for the system. The trains run from 6:00 AM until midnight, with intervals ranging from 4 to 8 minutes during peak hours. The system handles approximately 105,000 passengers daily.
All stations feature both Russian and Tatar language signs, reflecting the bilingual nature of the Republic of Tatarstan. The stations are designed with unique architectural elements that incorporate local cultural motifs and modern safety features. Platform screen doors were installed at all stations to enhance passenger safety, making Kazan Metro one of the first systems in Russia to implement this technology.
Future expansion plans include the extension of the existing line and the construction of a second line. The authorities have approved plans to add three more stations to the Central Line by 2027, which will extend the system further into the city's southeastern districts.
