About Saint-Leu

Saint-Leu is a commune situated on the western coast of Réunion, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. With a population of approximately 35,600 inhabitants, it is known for its excellent surfing conditions and significant tourist attractions.

The commune extends from sea level to the mountainous interior, encompassing diverse landscapes including coral reefs and forested highlands. Saint-Leu experiences a relatively dry tropical climate compared to the eastern part of the island, making it particularly attractive for tourism and outdoor activities. The area is renowned for its marine life and coral reefs, protected within the Natural Marine Reserve of Réunion.

Notable landmarks include the Kelonia Observatory, a sea turtle research and rehabilitation center that attracts numerous visitors, and the Conservatoire Botanique National de Mascarin, which houses an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. The Museum of Stella Matutina, housed in a former sugar factory, documents the history of sugar production on the island.

The town's infrastructure includes various tourist facilities, hotels, and restaurants, primarily concentrated along the coastal area.
