About Brazzaville
Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo, located on the north bank of the Congo River. Established in 1880 by French colonial empire, the city was named after Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, an Italian-born French explorer. As of 2023, its population exceeds 2.7 million people, making it one of Central Africa's major urban centers.
The city serves as the nation's political, economic, and cultural hub. Brazzaville features a tropical savanna climate with a lengthy rainy season from October to May and a shorter dry season from June to September. The average annual temperature is around 77°F (25°C). The city houses several significant governmental institutions, including the Parliament and various ministries.
Notable landmarks include the Sacred Heart Cathedral, built in 1892, and the Nabemba Tower, the tallest building in Central Africa at 106 meters (348 feet). The Poto-Poto School of Painting, established in 1951, is renowned for its distinctive African art style. The city is also home to the National Museum of Congo, which showcases the country's rich cultural heritage and historical artifacts.
Transportation infrastructure includes Maya-Maya Airport, which serves as the country's primary international gateway. The city is directly across the Congo River from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making these capitals the world's second-closest pair of capital cities (after Rome and Vatican City). The Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial, completed in 2006, stands as a significant monument honoring the city's founder. Brazzaville also hosts the headquarters of several regional organizations, including the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Africa.
