About Republic of the Congo
Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, occupies 132,000 square miles (342,000 square kilometers) in Central Africa. The country borders Gabon, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Angola (Cabinda exclave), with a short Atlantic coastline of 105 miles.
The population reaches approximately 6.2 million people (2023 estimate), with about 70% living in the two largest cities: Brazzaville, the capital, and Pointe-Noire, the economic center. Brazzaville, home to 2.7 million residents, serves as the political and administrative hub, situated along the Congo River directly across from Kinshasa.
The country's economy relies heavily on oil exports, which account for approximately 60% of the GDP. Timber production, agriculture, and mining also contribute significantly to the economic sector. The Congo Basin rainforest covers about 65% of the national territory, making timber a valuable resource.
The climate remains equatorial with high humidity and temperatures averaging between 75°F and 85°F (24°C to 29°C) year-round. Two distinct seasons characterize the weather pattern: a rainy season from October to May and a dry season from June to September.
Tourism focuses on natural attractions, including Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, home to western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, and numerous primate species. Odzala-Kokoua National Park offers visitors opportunities for wildlife viewing and hiking through pristine rainforest. The Loufoulakari Falls near Brazzaville attracts visitors with its scenic views and hiking trails.
French serves as the official language, while Lingala and Kituba function as widely-used national languages. The country maintains a multi-party democracy, though political stability has faced challenges since independence from France in 1960.
