About Hamad International Airport

Hamad International Airport (HIA) is the main international airport serving Doha, Qatar. Opened in 2014 to replace the former Doha International Airport, it serves as the home base for Qatar Airways and handles over 35 million passengers annually. The airport, which cost approximately $17 billion to construct, covers an area of 5,400 acres (2,200 hectares).

The terminal complex features two transfer halls, 138 check-in counters, 41 gates, and multiple high-end lounges. The facility is notable for its distinctive architecture and luxurious amenities, including a 25-meter swimming pool, squash courts, and a hotel. One of its most recognizable features is the 23-foot-tall yellow teddy bear sculpture created by Swiss artist Urs Fischer, which has become an iconic symbol of the airport.

HIA operates two parallel runways, each measuring 14,760 feet (4,500 meters), capable of accommodating all commercial aircraft types, including the Airbus A380. The airport's cargo terminal has an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes.

The facility has received numerous awards for its services and design, including being named "Best Airport in the World" by Skytrax in 2021 and 2022. Environmental sustainability is a key focus, with the airport implementing various green initiatives such as smart lighting systems and water conservation programs. In preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the airport underwent significant expansion, increasing its capacity to handle over 58 million passengers annually.
