About Henderson Island
Henderson Island is an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean, part of the Pitcairn Islands British Overseas Territory. The island has an area of 37.3 square kilometers (14.4 square miles) and is located approximately 193 kilometers northeast of Pitcairn Island.
The island is one of the world's best examples of an elevated coral atoll and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Despite its remote location, Henderson Island has gained attention for having one of the highest concentrations of plastic debris recorded anywhere in the world, with an estimated 37.7 million pieces of plastic on its beaches.
Henderson Island's ecosystem includes 10 endemic plant species and 4 endemic bird species. The island's limestone cliffs rise to approximately 33 meters above sea level. Archaeological evidence suggests that Polynesian settlers inhabited the island between the 12th and 15th centuries before abandoning it.
