About Northern Mariana Islands
Northern Mariana Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the western Pacific Ocean. The archipelago consists of 14 main islands situated between Japan and the Philippines, with a total land area of 179 square miles (464 square kilometers).
The territory has approximately 55,000 inhabitants as of 2022, with the majority residing on Saipan, the largest and most populous island. Saipan is also the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. The other two primary populated islands include Tinian and Rota. The official languages include English, Chamorro, and Carolinian.
The Northern Mariana Islands experience a tropical marine climate with relatively consistent temperatures throughout the year, averaging between 75°F and 85°F (24°C to 29°C). The region faces occasional typhoons between July and November. The islands originated from volcanic activity, resulting in mountainous terrain surrounded by coral reefs.
Tourism and garment manufacturing historically formed the backbone of the Northern Mariana Islands' economy. However, the garment industry has declined significantly since the mid-2000s. Currently, tourism, particularly from East Asian countries, drives the economy. The US military presence also contributes substantially to economic activity, especially on Tinian island. Agriculture plays a minor role, with production primarily focused on coconuts, breadfruit, tomatoes, and melons.
The islands offer numerous attractions for visitors, including World War II historical sites, pristine beaches, and diving locations. The American Memorial Park in Saipan commemorates those who died in the Marianas Campaign of World War II. The Grotto, a limestone cavity filled with sea water, attracts cave divers from around the world. Managaha Island, accessible by boat from Saipan, provides popular snorkeling and water sports opportunities.
The territory operates under a presidential representative democratic system, with the US President as the head of state. A locally elected governor leads the commonwealth government. The Northern Mariana Islands maintain a unique political relationship with the United States through a Covenant agreement, which grants US citizenship to its inhabitants while preserving certain local autonomy.
