About Alofi
Alofi is the capital city of Niue, a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand. Located on the central west coast of the island, it is the main population center and serves as the seat of government for this Pacific nation.
The city consists of two villages: Alofi North and Alofi South, with a combined population of approximately 1,000 people, representing about half of Niue's total population. Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Heta in 2004, which severely damaged the southern part of the city, many government operations were relocated to a new center in Fonuakula, slightly inland from the original settlement.
Notable landmarks in Alofi include the Niue Parliament Building, Commercial Center, and the Tomb of Peniamina, who introduced Christianity to the island in 1846. The city features the country's main port facility, which serves both commercial and passenger vessels. Hanan International Airport, located near the city, provides the only air connection to and from Niue, with regular flights to Auckland, New Zealand.
The city offers several tourist amenities including hotels, restaurants, and a visitor center. The surrounding waters are known for whale watching opportunities between July and October, when humpback whales migrate through the area. The Opaahi Sea Track and Utuko Reef are popular spots for snorkeling and observing marine life.
