About Lagos

Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, is a sprawling megalopolis with an estimated metropolitan population exceeding 25 million people. Originally founded as a port city by the Yoruba people in the 15th century, Lagos has evolved from its humble beginnings to become Africa's foremost financial, economic, and cultural powerhouse.

The city is divided into two main areas: the mainland and a series of islands. The most prominent islands include Lagos Island, which houses the Central Business District, and Victoria Island, known for its luxury hotels, beach resorts, and shopping districts. The Third Mainland Bridge, one of Africa's longest bridges at 11.8 kilometers, connects these areas.

As Nigeria's economic heart, Lagos generates approximately 25% of Nigeria's total GDP. The city is home to Nollywood, Africa's largest film industry, and hosts the continent's most active art scene. The Port of Lagos, comprising the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, handles the majority of Nigeria's maritime trade.

Despite infrastructure challenges, Lagos continues to attract significant investment and development. The ambitious Eko Atlantic project, a planned city being constructed on land reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizes the city's growth aspirations. The newly developed Lekki Free Trade Zone and the upcoming Dangote Refinery further cement Lagos's position as a major economic hub.

Cultural landmarks include the National Museum of Lagos, the historic Tafawa Balewa Square, and the vibrant New Afrika Shrine, which celebrates the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The city's dynamic music scene has produced numerous international stars and helped popularize Afrobeats music globally.
