About Abuja
Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria and serves as the seat of the Federal Government. Located in the center of the country, it officially became Nigeria's capital in 1991, replacing Lagos. The city was purposefully built during the 1980s and was designed to be a symbol of Nigeria's unity and diversity.
The city occupies a strategic location within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and sits at an elevation of 840 meters above sea level. Abuja experiences three weather conditions annually: a warm, humid rainy season, a dry season, and a brief harmattan period. The metropolitan area has a population of approximately 3.77 million inhabitants (as of 2022), making it one of Nigeria's most populous cities.
Notable landmarks include the Aso Rock, a 400-meter monolith that forms the backdrop to Nigeria's Presidential Complex, the National Assembly, and the Supreme Court. The city's modern architecture is exemplified by structures such as the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Christian Centre. The Zuma Rock, located just north of the city, is a prominent natural landmark and tourist attraction.
Abuja's infrastructure features a well-planned road network, with the city divided into distinct districts. The Central Business District houses government buildings, corporate headquarters, and diplomatic missions. Educational institutions include the University of Abuja and several other higher learning centers. The city is served by Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, which handles both domestic and international flights.
The city's cultural landscape is enriched by venues such as the National Arts and Culture Center, the Abuja Craft Village, and various museums. The Millennium Park, designed by renowned architect Manfredi Nicoletti, is the largest public park in the city and serves as a major recreational facility for residents and visitors.
