About Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, situated in the Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of approximately 4,600 feet (1,400 meters). The city serves as the country's primary economic, cultural, and political center, with a population of around 1 million people in the city proper and over 4 million in its metropolitan area.
The city's history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of settlements in the valley dating to at least 185 AD. Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases the city's rich architectural heritage with its complex of palaces, courtyards, and temples built during the Malla dynasty (13th-18th centuries). The square suffered significant damage during the 2015 earthquake but remains one of the city's most important historical landmarks.

Kathmandu is renowned for its religious significance to both Hinduism and Buddhism. Notable religious sites include the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Boudha Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal. The Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, sits atop a hill overlooking the city and represents an important Buddhist pilgrimage site.

The city faces significant urban challenges, including air pollution, traffic congestion, and rapid urbanization. Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport serves as Nepal's primary gateway for international travelers and is particularly important for tourism, as the city serves as a starting point for mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas, including Mount Everest.
The local economy is diverse, encompassing traditional crafts, modern industries, and services. Thamel, the tourist district, is filled with hotels, restaurants, and shops selling traditional Nepalese goods. The city is also an educational hub, home to Tribhuvan University, Nepal's oldest university, and numerous colleges and research institutions. The local cuisine reflects the city's cultural diversity, with influences from Newari, Tibetan, and Indian culinary traditions, making Kathmandu a significant gastronomic destination in South Asia.
