About Shibamata
Shibamata is a traditional district in Katsushika ward, famous for preserving the atmosphere of Tokyo's shitamachi (old downtown) culture. The area gained national recognition through the Tora-san film series, featuring the beloved character Kuruma Torajiro and showcasing local customs and landscapes. Taishakuten Temple serves as the district's spiritual center, renowned for its elaborate wood carvings and traditional architecture.
The temple's approach, Sando Shopping Street, maintains the appearance of early 20th century Japan with traditional shops selling local specialties and handicrafts. Yamamoto-tei represents a well-preserved example of traditional Japanese residential architecture, featuring authentic gardens and interior design from the Taisho period.
Edogawa River borders the district, providing scenic walking paths and seasonal cherry blossom viewing opportunities. The area hosts traditional festivals and cultural events throughout the year. Shibamata Museum displays local history and artifacts related to the famous film series, preserving the district's cultural heritage and connection to Japanese popular culture.
