About Kouzushima Island
Kouzushima Island, located approximately 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, forms part of the Izu Island chain and serves as a popular destination for outdoor recreation and natural hot springs. The island features distinctive white sand beaches created from volcanic pumice, including Maehama Beach, which stretches for several kilometers along the island's western coast. Regular ferry and air services connect the island to mainland Tokyo, making it accessible for both day trips and extended stays.
The island's volcanic activity provides numerous natural hot springs, including Jinata Onsen, an outdoor hot spring pool located directly on the rocky coastline where visitors can bathe while enjoying ocean views. Mount Tenjo offers hiking trails and panoramic views of the surrounding Izu Islands and, on clear days, Mount Fuji on the mainland.
Traditional island industries include fishing and seaweed cultivation, while tourism has become increasingly important to the local economy. The island hosts various festivals throughout the year, including traditional taiko drumming performances. Kouzushima Nature Park protects local flora and fauna while providing recreational facilities. The island's combination of natural hot springs, beaches, and outdoor activities makes it a popular retreat destination for Tokyo residents.
