About Hachijojima Island
Hachijojima Island, located 287 kilometers south of Tokyo, represents one of the larger and more accessible islands in Tokyo's island territories. The island features a subtropical climate and volcanic landscape with two main peaks: Mount Mihara and Mount Hachijo-Fuji, the latter resembling a miniature version of Mount Fuji. Regular air service from Haneda Airport makes Hachijojima more accessible than other Tokyo islands, with flights taking approximately 55 minutes.
The island's economy combines tourism, agriculture, and traditional crafts, particularly the production of kihachijo, a distinctive yellow silk textile that has been designated as a traditional craft. Hachijojima Botanical Park showcases the island's unique flora, including many subtropical species. The island offers various outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, and hot spring bathing at several onsen facilities.
Urami Falls provides a scenic hiking destination with waterfalls cascading behind a walkable path. The island maintains several museums and cultural sites documenting its history as a place of exile during the Edo period. Traditional festivals and cultural events preserve local customs while attracting visitors interested in authentic island culture and natural beauty.
