About Asakusa

Asakusa represents one of Tokyo's most traditional districts, preserving the atmosphere of old Edo period Japan. Located in Taito City, the area centers around Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple founded in 628 AD. The temple's Thunder Gate (Kaminarimon) with its massive red lantern serves as the iconic entrance to the complex.

Nakamise Shopping Street leads visitors from the Thunder Gate to the main temple hall, lined with traditional shops selling souvenirs, snacks, and crafts. The street has maintained its commercial function for centuries, offering items like ningyo-yaki dolls and melon pan bread.

The district also features Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center, designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, providing panoramic views of the area. Traditional entertainment venues include Hanayashiki, Japan's oldest amusement park established in 1853. The Sumida River borders the district, offering scenic boat rides and views of the Tokyo Skytree across the water.
