About Aogashima Island

Aogashima Island represents one of Tokyo's most remote inhabited volcanic islands, located approximately 358 kilometers south of mainland Tokyo in the Philippine Sea. The island forms part of the Izu Island chain and serves as both a village and the entire landmass, making it one of the smallest municipalities in Japan with a population of around 160 residents. The island's unique double volcanic caldera structure creates a distinctive landscape with the smaller Maruyama crater nested within the larger outer caldera.

Access to Aogashima requires either helicopter service from nearby Hachijojima Island or boat transportation, weather permitting, making it one of Japan's most isolated communities. The island's economy relies primarily on fishing, agriculture, and limited tourism. Oyama serves as the island's highest point and provides panoramic views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean.

The island features unique geothermal activity with natural hot springs and volcanic vents used by residents for cooking and heating. Traditional island culture remains strong due to geographic isolation, preserving customs and community bonds. The challenging access and pristine natural environment make Aogashima a destination for adventurous travelers seeking authentic rural Japanese island life.
