The island covers an area of 83 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 7,150 inhabitants. The main settlement, also called Pantelleria, serves as the island's administrative center and principal port.
Pantelleria is of volcanic origin, with its highest point being Montagna Grande at 836 meters above sea level. The island's last volcanic eruption occurred in 1891, underwater off the northwest coast. Volcanic phenomena remain visible today through natural hot springs and fumaroles, particularly in areas like the Bagno Asciutto (dry sauna) cave and various coastal thermal pools.
The island has been inhabited since Neolithic times and has been controlled by various civilizations throughout history, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans. The Arabic name for the island was Bent el Riah (Daughter of the Wind), reflecting its characteristically windy conditions.
Pantelleria is renowned for its distinctive traditional architecture, characterized by cubic stone dwellings called dammusi. These structures feature thick volcanic stone walls, domed roofs, and small windows designed to maintain cool interior temperatures during hot summers and collect rainwater. The dammusi construction style shows clear Arabic architectural influences and is particularly well-adapted to the island's arid climate.
The island's economy is primarily based on agriculture and tourism. Pantelleria is famous for producing Zibibbo grapes, which are used to make Passito di Pantelleria, a sweet dessert wine with Denominazione di Origine Controllata status. The island is also Italy's largest producer of capers, which grow wild across the volcanic terrain. Due to limited rainfall, farmers have developed specialized cultivation techniques including low vine training in circular hollows called alberello pantesco, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Strong winds are common, particularly the sirocco from Africa.
