About Noto

Noto is a historic city located in the southeastern part of Sicily, Italy, specifically in the Province of Syracuse. The current city was built in the early 18th century after the destruction of the original settlement, known as Noto Antica, by the devastating 1693 Sicily earthquake. The modern town is situated approximately 8 kilometers from the original site, and it stands as a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture.

The city was meticulously planned and built under the supervision of Giuseppe Lanza, Duke of Camastra, who was appointed by the Spanish Viceroy. The reconstruction showcased the architectural principles of the late Baroque period, featuring a grid-like street layout and grand buildings designed by prominent architects such as Rosario Gagliardi, Vincenzo Sinatra, and Paolo Labisi. In 2002, UNESCO recognized Noto's historical significance by including it in the World Heritage Site "Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto," along with seven other towns in southeastern Sicily.

Among the city's most notable landmarks is the Noto Cathedral (Cathedral of San Nicolò), which dominates Noto's skyline. The cathedral, completed in 1776, suffered a dramatic collapse of its dome in 1996 but was meticulously restored and reopened in 2007. Other significant architectural treasures include the Palazzo Ducezio, which currently serves as the town hall, the Church of San Domenico, considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the region, and the Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata, renowned for its elaborate balconies supported by grotesque figures.

The city is laid out along three parallel streets running east to west. The main thoroughfare, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is intersected by two squares, Piazza Immacolata and Piazza Municipio, creating a harmonious urban landscape. The limestone used in construction gives the buildings their characteristic golden-honey color, earning Noto the nickname "Stone Garden" and "Capital of Baroque."

Every third weekend of May, Noto hosts the Infiorata, a flower festival where local artists create intricate mosaics made entirely of flower petals along Via Nicolaci. The city is also known for its culinary traditions, particularly its almonds, which are used in various local confections, and its distinctive wine production. The surrounding area, known as Val di Noto, is famous for its olive groves, citrus orchards, and vineyards that contribute to the region's agricultural economy.
