About Kythnos

Kythnos is an island in the western Cyclades, located between Kea and Serifos. The island covers 39 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 1,500 residents. Merihas on the west coast serves as the main port, while Chora (also called Messaria), the capital, is located inland in the center of the island, featuring typical Cycladic architecture.

The fishing village of Loutra on the northeast coast is known for its thermal springs, which have been utilized since ancient times. Modern spa facilities operate in the village, making it a destination for therapeutic tourism. The springs contain iron and sulfur and maintain temperatures between 52-55°C (126-131°F). The village of Dryopida, built in an amphitheater in a valley, preserves traditional architecture with narrow stepped streets and red-tiled roofs, distinctive for the Cyclades.

Kythnos features numerous beaches, mostly along the east coast, including Episkopi, Apokrousi, and Kolona, a distinctive double-sided beach connecting Kythnos to the small islet of Agios Loukas. The island remains relatively quiet and undeveloped compared to other Cycladic islands, attracting visitors seeking a more traditional experience. The economy is based on agriculture, livestock, and modest tourism. Archaeological excavations at Vryokastro have revealed an ancient city dating from geometric through Roman periods.
