About Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo (officially Megisti, meaning "largest") is the easternmost Greek island, located just 1.5 miles from the Turkish coast and approximately 75 miles east of Rhodes. Despite its name, the island is the smallest of the Dodecanese, covering just 5 square miles, with a population of approximately 500 permanent residents. The settlement of Kastellorizo Town wraps around a natural harbor on the north coast.

The island's name derives from the red rocks of its medieval castle, Kastello Rosso (Red Castle), built by the Knights of St. John on ancient foundations. Despite its small size, Kastellorizo has an impressive architectural heritage, with grand neoclassical houses built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the island prospered from maritime trade. Many buildings were damaged during World War II but restoration efforts continue.

The Blue Cave (Fokiali), located on the southeast coast, is a large sea cave with deep blue water created by light refraction, accessible by small boat. The island has limited beaches but offers clear waters for swimming. Kastellorizo gained international attention as the primary filming location for the 1991 film "Mediterraneo." The island is accessible by flight from Rhodes or ferry service, though it remains relatively isolated, maintaining an atmosphere distinct from larger tourist destinations.
