About Folegandros
Folegandros is a small island in the southern Cyclades, located between Sikinos and Milos. The island covers 12 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 765 residents. Karavostasis serves as the main port on the southeast coast, while Chora, the capital, is built on a cliff 200 meters above sea level, offering dramatic views across the Aegean.
Chora is divided into two quarters: the medieval Kastro, built by the Venetian Marco Sanudo in the 13th century with houses forming a defensive wall, and the outer settlement. The Church of Panagia (the Virgin Mary) sits atop a zigzagging path of steps above the town and is the destination of an annual religious festival on Easter Sunday. The village of Ano Meria in the northwest consists of a series of scattered settlements preserving traditional agricultural lifestyle.
Folegandros remained relatively isolated and undiscovered by mass tourism until recent decades, maintaining a quieter, more authentic atmosphere compared to neighboring islands. The island has limited beaches, with Katergo accessible by boat or hiking, and Agali on the west coast. Its dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain make it popular with hikers.
