About Alonnisos
Alonissos is the most remote of the Northern Sporades islands, located in the northwest Aegean Sea. The island covers 25 square miles and has a permanent population of approximately 2,800 residents. Patitiri serves as the main port and capital, developed after an earthquake destroyed the old capital in 1965.
The old village, known as Chora or Old Alonissos, is situated on a hilltop and has been gradually restored, now featuring traditional stone houses, tavernas, and craft shops. The island is surrounded by the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, established in 1992 as Greece's first marine protected area and one of the largest in Europe, created to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
Alonissos remains relatively undeveloped compared to other Sporades islands, with tourism focused on nature-based activities, hiking, and diving. The island has limited ferry connections, primarily to Skiathos, Skopelos, and Volos on the mainland.
