About Lindos
Lindos is a town located on the east coast of Rhodes, approximately 50 kilometers south of Rhodes Town. The settlement has a permanent population of around 1,100 residents, which increases significantly during the tourist season. Lindos was one of the three ancient city-states of Rhodes, founded by the Dorians in the 10th century BCE.
The Acropolis of Lindos rises 116 meters above the sea on a steep cliff, offering views of the surrounding coastline. The site contains ruins from various periods, with the most significant being the Temple of Athena Lindia, originally dating to the 4th century BCE. The sanctuary was a major cult center in antiquity, visited by historical figures including Alexander the Great. The Hellenistic Stoa with its reconstructed columns and the remains of a Roman temple are also prominent features.
The town itself is characterized by traditional whitewashed houses with flat roofs and pebble mosaic courtyards, built in a distinctive Aegean architectural style. Many houses are designated as protected buildings. The Church of Panagia (Church of the Assumption), located in the town center, dates to the 15th century and contains important Byzantine frescoes and icons. Several captains' houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, built by wealthy sea merchants, feature elaborate carved doorways and ornate interiors. The town is pedestrianized, with no vehicles allowed in the narrow streets. The beach of St. Paul's Bay, a small sheltered cove, is named after the apostle who allegedly landed there.
