About Göttingen

Göttingen is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, with approximately 127,000 inhabitants, located on the Leine River. The city is renowned as a university town, with the Georg-August University profoundly shaping its character and economy since its founding in 1737. Göttingen's academic tradition has produced over 40 Nobel Prize laureates, more than any other German city relative to its size.

The Gänseliesel (Goose Girl), a fountain statue in front of the Old Town Hall dating from 1901, has become the city's symbol. A local tradition requires newly minted doctoral graduates to climb the fountain and kiss the statue. The St. Johannis Church features Gothic architecture with notable stained glass windows. The Old Botanical Garden provides a peaceful retreat in the city center.

The university campus is integrated throughout the city rather than confined to a specific area. The University Library is one of Germany's largest research libraries with millions of volumes. The Max Planck Institute maintains several research facilities in Göttingen, focusing on biophysical chemistry, dynamics and self-organization, and solar system research.

The city's economy heavily depends on the university, research institutes, and associated knowledge-based industries. Medical technology and precision instruments are important sectors. Göttingen's old town features half-timbered houses and numerous bookstores and cafes serving the student population. The city maintains a vibrant cultural scene with theaters, museums, and music festivals despite its relatively small size.
