About Freiburg
Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located at the edge of the Black Forest with approximately 237,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1120, it is known for its medieval old town, sunny climate, and environmental consciousness. Freiburg is often called Germany's "Green City" for its sustainable urban development and environmental policies.
The Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster), built between the 13th and 16th centuries, dominates the city center with its 116-meter-high Gothic tower, one of the few church towers in Germany completed in medieval times. The cathedral features intricate stonework and stained glass windows. The Schwabentor and Martinstor are the two remaining medieval city gates.
The old town features distinctive water channels called Bächle running through the streets, which legend says will ensure marriage to a Freiburger if you accidentally step in one. The Augustiner Museum displays medieval and baroque art in a converted monastery. The nearby Schauinsland mountain offers panoramic views accessible by historic cable car.
The University of Freiburg, founded in 1457, is one of Germany's oldest and most prestigious universities. The city pioneered solar energy technology and sustainable urban planning, with the Vauban district serving as a model eco-neighborhood. Freiburg's economy emphasizes renewable energy, solar technology, environmental research, and tourism. The city's location near France and Switzerland creates an international atmosphere with excellent Black Forest hiking access.
