About Makatea

Makatea stands as a unique raised coral atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, rising dramatically to 110 meters (361 feet) above sea level. With an area of 24 km2 (9.3 sq mi), it was once a major phosphate mining center from 1917 to 1966. The island's distinct geology and abandoned mining infrastructure have created a landscape unlike any other in French Polynesia.

Today, the island's population of about 100 people focuses on small-scale agriculture and coconut cultivation. The dramatic cliffs and caves formed by ancient coral formations have begun attracting adventure tourists and rock climbing enthusiasts.

In the plot of the movie Six Days, Seven Nights (1998) directed by Ivan Reitman, part of the action takes place on the island of Makatea.
