About Hikueru
Hikueru is a historic atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, spanning an area of 79 km2 (31 sq mi). Once famous as a major pearl diving center in the early 20th century, the atoll played a significant role in French Polynesia's pearl trade history.
The atoll gained literary fame through Robert Dean Frisbie's book "The Book of Puka-Puka," which documented life on the atoll. Today, the population of approximately 200 inhabitants focuses on pearl farming and copra production. The atoll suffered severe damage during a devastating cyclone in 1903, which significantly altered its landscape and population distribution.
