About Hao
Hao is a significant atoll in the eastern Tuamotu Archipelago, distinguished by its remarkable size and strategic importance. The atoll spans 50 km (31 miles) in length and 14 km (8.7 miles) in width, encompassing a total lagoon area of 720 km2 (280 sq mi), making it one of the largest atolls in French Polynesia.
The atoll gained international significance during the French nuclear testing period (1966-1996), serving as the forward base for operations at Moruroa and Fangataufa. The military presence led to the construction of a 3,380-meter runway, one of the longest in French Polynesia, which currently serves as Hao Airport (IATA: HOI).
Today, Hao's economy centers around pearl farming, copra production, and fishing. The atoll's large lagoon, accessible through a wide pass known as Kaki Pass, supports extensive marine life and provides excellent conditions for aquaculture. The main village of Otepa houses most of the atoll's population of approximately 1,000 inhabitants.
The atoll features several historical sites, including ancient Polynesian marae and remnants of early European contact. Despite its military history, Hao has begun to develop its tourism potential, particularly in sports fishing and scuba diving, capitalizing on its pristine waters and abundant marine life.
