About Fakarava
Fakarava is the second largest atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago, with a total lagoon area of 1,112 km2 (429 sq mi). The atoll has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006, recognizing its exceptional marine biodiversity and traditional resource management practices.
The atoll is characterized by two main passes: Garuae Pass, the largest pass in French Polynesia, and Tumakohua Pass. These passes are renowned among divers for their spectacular shark populations and pristine coral formations. The local economy combines traditional pearl farming with growing eco-tourism activities.
