About Ahe

Ahe is an atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. The atoll stretches approximately 23.5 km (14.6 miles) in length and 12.2 km (7.6 miles) in width, with a total lagoon area of 138 km2 (53 sq mi). The atoll's economy is primarily based on black pearl farming, which was introduced in the 1970s and remains the main source of income for local inhabitants. The population of approximately 550 people resides mainly in the village of Tenukupara. Ahe features several small motu (islets) around its perimeter, with coconut palm plantations contributing to copra production. The atoll is accessible via a small airport (IATA: AHE) that connects it to Tahiti and other islands in the archipelago. The crystal-clear waters of the lagoon support a diverse marine ecosystem, making it a significant location for marine research and small-scale tourism activities.
