About Leeward Islands

The Leeward Islands (Îles Sous-le-Vent) form the western part of the Society Islands, encompassing some of French Polynesia's most famous islands including Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, and Taha'a. This group covers a total area of approximately 395 km2 (153 sq mi).

The islands are characterized by their high volcanic peaks, surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons and barrier reefs. Raiatea, the largest island in the group, holds particular cultural significance as the ancient spiritual center of Eastern Polynesia and home to the important Taputapuatea marae, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The region supports a population of approximately 37,000 inhabitants and maintains a diverse economy based on tourism, agriculture (particularly vanilla production), and pearl farming. The islands are connected by regular air services to Tahiti and offer various levels of tourist infrastructure, from luxury resorts to family-run pensions.
