About Mangareva

Mangareva is the largest and most significant island of the Gambier Islands, with an area of 15.4 km2 (5.9 sq mi). The island rises to Mount Duff at 441 meters (1,447 feet), providing spectacular views of the surrounding lagoon. As the primary center of Catholicism in French Polynesia during the 19th century, it features numerous historic religious buildings, including the remarkable Saint Michael's Cathedral.

The island's economy centers around pearl farming and tourism, with approximately 1,300 inhabitants maintaining traditional Polynesian customs alongside modern developments. The island serves as a gateway to Pitcairn Island and maintains regular air connections to Tahiti.
