About Akamaru

Akamaru is a historically significant coral island in the Gambier Islands of French Polynesia, covering an area of approximately 2.1 km2 (0.81 sq mi). The island gained prominence in 1834 when Catholic missionaries, led by Honoré Laval, established one of the first Christian settlements in French Polynesia. The island's landscape is marked by ancient religious architecture, including the remnants of the Saint Joseph's Church, built in 1835. The small local population maintains traditional Polynesian lifestyles, engaging in subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale pearl cultivation. The island's coastline features pristine beaches and clear waters, though tourism remains limited due to its remote location and minimal infrastructure. The surrounding waters are known for their exceptional visibility, making them popular among the few divers who venture to this remote location.
