About Gambier Islands

The Gambier Islands (Îles Gambier) form a significant archipelago in French Polynesia, located at the southeast extremity of the Tuamotu Archipelago. The group consists of several volcanic islands enclosed by a single outer reef, covering a total land area of 27.8 km2 (10.7 sq mi). The main island, Mangareva, represents about 56% of the archipelago's total land mass.

The islands played a pivotal role in French Polynesian history as one of the earliest centers of Catholic missionary activity in the 19th century. Under the direction of Father Honoré Laval, the islands underwent significant transformation, resulting in the construction of numerous religious buildings, including the remarkable Saint Michael's Cathedral in Rikitea, the largest church in French Polynesia at the time of its construction.

The archipelago's economy is primarily based on pearl farming, with the Gambier Islands producing some of the finest quality black pearls in French Polynesia. The pristine waters and protected lagoon provide ideal conditions for pearl cultivation. Traditional activities such as fishing and small-scale agriculture continue to support the population of approximately 1,500 inhabitants.

Archaeological evidence suggests extensive pre-European settlement, with numerous ancient stone structures and platforms (marae) scattered throughout the islands. The islands maintain a distinct cultural identity, with their own linguistic variations and traditional practices.
