French Polynesia is located in the South Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway between South America and Australia. This French overseas territory consists of 118 islands and atolls spread across five archipelagos, covering an area of approximately 2.5 million square kilometers of ocean.

The territory lies approximately 6,000 kilometers east of Australia and about 7,500 kilometers west of South America. Its main archipelagos include the Society Islands (where the capital Papeete is located on Tahiti), the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, the Austral Islands, and the Gambier Islands.

The islands are positioned between 7° and 27° South latitude and between 134° and 155° West longitude, placing them in a tropical zone. This strategic location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean made these islands important stopping points for early Pacific explorers and continues to make them a significant destination for modern tourism.
