About Rurutu
Rurutu is a raised coral island in the Austral Islands, covering 32.7 km2 (12.6 sq mi). The island is famous for its unique geological features, including dramatic limestone caves and cliffs. Between July and October, humpback whales frequent its waters, making it a popular whale-watching destination.
The island's 2,500 inhabitants maintain strong agricultural traditions, producing high-quality coffee, taro, and other crops. Rurutu is also known for its traditional handicrafts, particularly the creation of intricate woven items from pandanus fibers.
