About Rimatara

Rimatara is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Austral Islands, with an area of 8.6 km2 (3.3 sq mi). The island is notable for being home to the rare Rimatara Lorikeet, an endemic bird species found nowhere else in the world. The population of about 900 people maintains traditional crafts, particularly in the creation of distinctive woven hats and mats from pandanus leaves.
