About Val-d'Isère
Val-d'Isère is a ski resort and commune located in the Tarentaise Valley in the Savoie department of southeastern France. Situated at an elevation of 6,070 feet (1,850 meters) in the French Alps, the town lies near the Italian border and is part of the Rhône-Alpes region.
The resort is connected to the neighboring village of Tignes, forming the Espace Killy ski area, named after Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy, who was born in Val-d'Isère. Together, they offer approximately 300 kilometers of marked ski runs and access to extensive off-piste terrain. The highest point accessible by lift reaches 11,322 feet (3,450 meters) at the Grande Motte glacier.
Val-d'Isère has hosted numerous international alpine skiing competitions, including events during the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. The resort regularly features on the Alpine Skiing World Cup circuit, with races held on the famous Face de Bellevarde run. The town's ski season typically extends from late November through early May due to its high altitude and north-facing slopes.
The village maintains traditional Savoyard architecture alongside modern developments. L'Église Saint-Bernard de Menthon, the parish church dating from the 1930s, stands as a local landmark.
Val-d'Isère's economy centers primarily on winter tourism, though summer activities including hiking, mountain biking, and climbing have expanded the seasonal appeal.
