About Tignes
Tignes is a commune and ski resort located in the Tarentaise Valley in the Savoie department of southeastern France. The town sits at an elevation of 6,890 feet (2,100 meters) in the French Alps, making it one of the highest ski resorts in Europe.
The resort is part of the Espace Killy ski area, which it shares with the neighboring resort of Val d’Isère. Together, they provide access to approximately 300 kilometers of ski runs and 154 ski lifts. Tignes itself is divided into several villages at different elevations, including Tignes Val Claret, Tignes Le Lac, and Tignes Les Brévières.
The original village of Tignes was submerged in 1952 following the construction of the Tignes Dam on the Isère River. The dam, standing at 590 feet (180 meters) high, created the Lac du Chevril reservoir. Residents were relocated to higher ground where the modern resort was subsequently developed.
Due to its high altitude and the presence of the Grande Motte Glacier, Tignes offers year-round skiing opportunities. The resort hosted freestyle skiing events during the 1992 Winter Olympics held in Albertville. The area attracts approximately two million visitors annually during the winter season.
