About Les Houches

Les Houches is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. Located in the Chamonix Valley at an elevation of approximately 3,281 feet (1,000 meters), it lies about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and serves as the westernmost ski area in the Chamonix valley.

The commune is renowned as a winter sports destination, featuring the Kandahar downhill course, which regularly hosts World Cup alpine skiing events. The resort offers around 55 miles (88 kilometers) of ski slopes, with elevations ranging from 3,281 to 6,234 feet (1,000 to 1,900 meters). The area provides access to varied terrain suitable for different skill levels.

The Tramway du Mont Blanc, a mountain railway line that opened in 1909, begins in Les Houches and ascends to the Nid d'Aigle station at 7,766 feet (2,368 meters), offering access to hiking routes and views of the Mont Blanc massif.

The commune covers an area of approximately 18.7 square miles (48.5 square kilometers) and had a population of around 2,900 residents as of recent census data. Besides winter sports, the area attracts visitors for summer activities including hiking, mountaineering, and paragliding.
