About Alpe d'Huez

Alpe d'Huez is a ski resort in southeastern France, located in the Isère department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Situated at an elevation of 6,102 feet (1,860 meters) in the Grandes Rousses mountain range, the resort is approximately 39 miles (63 kilometers) from Grenoble.

The area is renowned for its skiing infrastructure, featuring 84 slopes and over 155 miles (249 kilometers) of ski runs. The resort's highest point reaches 11,070 feet (3,330 meters) at Pic Blanc, accessible by cable car. Alpe d'Huez is nicknamed "L'Île au Soleil" (The Island of Sun) due to averaging over 300 days of sunshine annually.

The mountain gained international recognition through cycling, particularly as a frequent stage finish in the Tour de France. The climb from Bourg-d'Oisans features 21 hairpin turns ascending 3,707 feet (1,130 meters) over 8.6 miles (13.8 kilometers), with an average gradient of 8.1 percent. Dutch cyclists have won the stage most frequently, leading to the nickname "Dutch Mountain."

The resort operates year-round, with Sarenne Glacier providing summer skiing opportunities. Winter sports infrastructure includes terrain parks and cross-country skiing trails. The village center contains shops, restaurants, and accommodations ranging from apartments to hotels. The area also offers summer activities including mountain biking, hiking, and the annual Alpe d'Huez International Comedy Film Festival, established in 1998.
