About The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel) is a wrought-iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. Standing 330 meters (1,083 feet) tall, including its antenna, the tower was the world's tallest man-made structure from 1889 until 1930. Named after engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower, it serves as both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures worldwide.
Construction began on January 28, 1887, and was completed on March 15, 1889, taking approximately two years, two months, and five days. The tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, officially known as the Exposition Universelle. The structure consists of four curved legs that taper inward until joining in a single tapered tower, constructed using 18,038 individual iron pieces held together by 2.5 million rivets.
The tower has three observation levels for visitors, located at 57 meters, 115 meters, and 276 meters above ground. Two restaurants operate within the structure: 58 Tour Eiffel on the first level and Le Jules Verne on the second level.
Originally intended as a temporary structure to be dismantled after 20 years, the Eiffel Tower's value as a radio transmission tower saved it from demolition. Today, it houses numerous radio and television transmission antennas.
Tourism statistics show that approximately 7 million people visit the Eiffel Tower annually, making it the most-visited paid monument in the world. The tower is painted every seven years to protect it from rust, requiring about 60 tons of paint. It weighs approximately 10,100 tons and sways up to 6-7 centimeters in strong winds.
