About Guantanamo Bay Naval Base

Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (also referred to as GTMO or Gitmo) is a United States military installation located on the southeastern coast of Cuba, occupying approximately 45 square miles (117 km²) of land and water around Guantánamo Bay.

It is the oldest overseas U.S. military base, continuously operated since 1898.

The United States gained control of the territory following the Spanish–American War of 1898. The Cuban–American Treaty of Relations, signed in 1903, formalized the lease agreement between the two countries. Under its terms, the United States pays an annual rent of $4,085. Since the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the Cuban government under Fidel Castro refused to cash the rent checks, accepting only the first payment made before the revolution. Cuba has consistently demanded the return of the territory, considering the lease agreement invalid, while the United States maintains that it can only be terminated by mutual consent of both parties.

The base is separated from the rest of Cuba by a 17-mile (27 km) fence line.

In January 2002, the U.S. Department of Defense established a detention facility at the base, officially known as Detention Camp Guantanamo, to hold individuals captured during the War on Terror. The facility was designated for detainees classified as "unlawful enemy combatants." At its peak, the camp held approximately 780 detainees. The legal status of the detainees has been subject to numerous U.S. Supreme Court rulings, including Rasul v. Bush (2004) and Boumediene v. Bush (2008), the latter of which affirmed detainees' rights to habeas corpus under the U.S. Constitution.

The base currently houses around 6,000 U.S. military and civilian personnel.

Guantanamo Bay Naval Base contains an airfield (IATA: NBW), a full port facility, schools, a hospital, and residential housing. It has historically served as a key logistical hub in the Caribbean region for U.S. naval operations. During the 1990s, the base also served as a temporary processing center for Haitian and Cuban migrants intercepted at sea.
