Cities and Towns in Yukon
Yukon is Canada's smallest territory by population, with approximately 48,000 residents as of recent census data. The territory contains only one city, Whitehorse, which serves as both the territorial capital and the primary urban center. The remaining communities are classified as towns, villages, and hamlets, with most settlements concentrated along major highway corridors.
Whitehorse
Whitehorse is Yukon's only city and largest municipality, home to roughly 70% of the territory's total population. Located along the Alaska Highway at the confluence of the Yukon River and Miles Canyon, the city functions as the administrative, commercial, and transportation hub. Whitehorse was incorporated as a city in 1950 and became the territorial capital in 1953, replacing Dawson City.
The city's economy centers on government services, tourism, mining support, and transportation. It features the Yukon's main airport, Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport, which provides year-round connections to southern Canada and seasonal service to Alaska.
Dawson City
Dawson City, located at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, served as the territorial capital until 1953. The town gained prominence during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-1899, when its population briefly swelled to approximately 40,000. Today, Dawson City maintains a population of around 1,400 and preserves numerous historic buildings from the gold rush era. The town is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
Watson Lake
Watson Lake is situated at the junction of the Alaska Highway and the Campbell Highway in southeastern Yukon. The community developed during the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942 and serves as a regional service center. It is known for the Sign Post Forest, which began in 1942 when a homesick soldier erected a sign pointing to his hometown.
Other Communities
Haines Junction, located at the intersection of the Alaska and Haines Highways, serves as the gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve. Carmacks, positioned along the Klondike Highway, functions as a service point between Whitehorse and Dawson City. Smaller communities include Teslin, Faro, Mayo, Ross River, and Old Crow, the territory's only fly-in community accessible solely by air year-round.
Many Yukon communities have significant First Nations populations, with 14 First Nations maintaining self-government agreements. Several settlements serve as administrative centers for these First Nations governments.
