Nunavut Towns
Nunavut contains 25 municipalities, all officially designated as hamlets except for Iqaluit, which holds city status. These communities are spread across three regions and are characterized by their remote locations and small populations.
Major Communities
Iqaluit is the territorial capital and only city, with a population of approximately 8,000 residents. It serves as the administrative and commercial center of Nunavut and is located on the southern coast of Baffin Island. The city has the territory's only traffic lights and features modern infrastructure including the Legislative Assembly building, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Rankin Inlet, located on the northwestern shore of Hudson Bay, is the second-largest community with around 3,000 people. It serves as a regional hub for the Kivalliq Region and has historical significance as a former nickel mining site.
Arviat, situated on the western shore of Hudson Bay, has approximately 3,000 inhabitants and is known as one of the fastest-growing communities in the territory. Cambridge Bay, with about 1,800 residents, serves as the regional center for the Kitikmeot Region and is located on Victoria Island.
Characteristics
All communities in Nunavut are accessible only by air year-round, with some having seasonal sea access. There are no roads connecting the communities to each other or to other parts of Canada. Most settlements maintain traditional Inuit cultural practices alongside modern amenities. Housing, infrastructure development, and cost of living remain significant challenges across all municipalities.
