Highways in Newfoundland and Labrador

Overview

The highway system in Newfoundland and Labrador consists of a network of numbered routes that connect communities across the province. The system is maintained by the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and includes primary highways, secondary routes, and regional roads. The Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) serves as the main transportation corridor across the island of Newfoundland, while the Trans-Labrador Highway provides the primary road connection through Labrador.

Route Classification

Highways in the province are designated with route numbers ranging from 1 to 999. Routes numbered 1-99 are considered primary highways, while routes numbered 100 and above are classified as secondary or regional routes.

Trans-Canada Highway

Route 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, extends approximately 905 kilometers across the island of Newfoundland from St. John's to Port aux Basques. This highway represents the easternmost section of the Trans-Canada Highway system and connects to the Marine Atlantic ferry service at Port aux Basques, providing a link to mainland Canada via Nova Scotia. The route passes through major communities including Clarenville, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Deer Lake, and Corner Brook.

Trans-Labrador Highway

Route 500, known as the Trans-Labrador Highway, spans approximately 1,140 kilometers and connects Labrador West to the Quebec border and eastward to communities along the Labrador coast. The highway was completed in sections over several decades, with the final coastal section between Cartwright Junction and Blanc-Sablon opening to through traffic in 2009. Prior to December 2009, portions of the route required winter ice roads or ferry services.

Major Routes

Avalon Peninsula Routes

Route 2 (Pitts Memorial Drive/Burin Peninsula Highway) extends from St. John's to Marystown on the Burin Peninsula, covering approximately 307 kilometers. Route 10 (Southern Shore Highway) connects St. John's to Trepassey along the southern Avalon Peninsula. Route 80 (Cape Shore Highway) serves communities along the western shore of the Avalon Peninsula. Route 90 (Conception Bay Highway) provides access to communities along Conception Bay.

Eastern and Central Routes

Route 230 (Bonavista Peninsula Highway) connects the Trans-Canada Highway to Bonavista. Route 330 (Road to the Beaches) and Route 340 (Gander Bay Highway) serve the northern shores of eastern Newfoundland. Route 360 (Gander Bay Road to Wesleyville) extends along the coast north of Gander. Route 430 (Great Northern Peninsula Highway) travels from Deer Lake to St. Anthony, a distance of approximately 444 kilometers.

Labrador Routes

Route 530 runs from the Quebec border through L'Anse-au-Clair, Forteau, and other coastal communities. Route 520 (Churchill Falls Access Road) provides access from the Trans-Labrador Highway to Churchill Falls.

Road Conditions and Maintenance

Highway maintenance in Newfoundland and Labrador faces challenges due to severe weather conditions, particularly during winter months. Snow clearing, ice control, and road repairs are ongoing activities. Some remote routes may experience seasonal closures or reduced maintenance during winter. The province operates a road condition reporting system to inform travelers of current highway status.
