British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. With an area of 944,735 sq km (364,764 sq mi), it is the third largest province in Canada by population, with approximately 5.7 million residents as of 2025.
The province features diverse geography, including rugged coastlines, mountain ranges, forests, and valleys. About 75% of British Columbia is mountainous, and 60% is covered by forests. The Coast Mountains and Canadian Rockies form the province's most iconic landscapes. The highest point is Mount Fairweather at 15,300 feet (4,663 meters), located on the border with Alaska.
British Columbia's history dates back approximately 11,500 years when the first Indigenous peoples settled in the region. European exploration began in the late 18th century with the voyages of James Cook and George Vancouver. The colony of British Columbia was established in 1858 during the Fraser Gold Rush, and in 1871, it became the sixth province to join the Canadian Confederation.
The economy was traditionally based on natural resources, particularly forestry, mining, and fishing. Today, while these sectors remain important, the province has diversified into technology, film production (Vancouver is known as "Hollywood North"), tourism, and international trade. The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest port and a crucial gateway for Pacific trade. The province's GDP was approximately $350 billion CAD in 2021, making it the fourth-largest provincial economy in Canada.
