About Langley
Langley is a small town located on the southern end of Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington. Situated on a bluff overlooking Saratoga Passage with views toward Camano Island and the Cascade Mountains, Langley has a population of approximately 1,100 residents, making it the smallest incorporated town on Whidbey Island. The town is known for its artistic community, boutique shops, galleries, and scenic waterfront setting. Founded in the late 19th century, Langley has maintained its historic small-town character while developing a reputation as an arts and cultural destination.
History and Development
Langley was founded in 1890 by Jacob Anthes, who platted the town and named it after his friend, J.W. Langley. The town was officially incorporated in 1913. Early economic activities included logging, farming, and small-scale maritime commerce. A wharf was constructed to facilitate shipping and passenger service. Throughout the 20th century, Langley remained a small, quiet community.
In recent decades, the town has gained recognition for its vibrant arts scene and tourism appeal. The preservation of historic buildings and the development of galleries, studios, and unique shops have attracted visitors and new residents. Despite growth pressures, Langley has maintained strict planning and zoning regulations to preserve its small-town character and scale.
Geography and Setting
Langley is perched on a bluff approximately 200 feet above Saratoga Passage, providing dramatic views of the water and mountains beyond. The town's commercial core is compact, centered on First and Second Streets, which run parallel to the bluff. Cascade Avenue is the main street leading into town from State Route 525. The Langley Marina and a small beach park are located at the base of the bluff, accessible by a stairway and road.
Arts and Culture
Langley has established itself as an arts community with numerous galleries, studios, and shops featuring work by local artists and craftspeople. The Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, located in the town, presents performances, films, and exhibitions year-round. The town's compact downtown area makes it easily walkable, with most attractions within a few blocks. Restaurants, cafes, and specialty food shops contribute to the town's appeal as a destination for day trips or weekend visits.
Annual events include the Langley Mystery Weekend, DjangoFest Northwest (a celebration of gypsy jazz music), and the Choochokam Arts Festival. These events draw visitors from throughout the region. The town also hosts a farmers market during summer months and various smaller cultural events throughout the year. The South Whidbey Historical Society Museum preserves and displays local history.
